Does Sunscreen Make Your Skin Lighter?

If you follow a skincare routine, then one step you cannot miss at any cost is sunscreen. Every skin specialist insists on using sunscreen on a daily basis due to its protective characteristics against the UV rays from the sun. 

Sunscreen acts as a barrier that reflects these rays and prevents them from penetrating the skin and causing damage. Let’s accept the fact that if your skin is tanned, then the damage is already done. However, you can prevent further damage, and that is the whole point of using sunscreen. Skin lightening can be achieved with it if you compare the before and after results. Here is how sunscreen is your skin’s best friend: 

  • Sunscreen can shield your skin because it has UV filters that reflect or absorb UV radiation. As long as your sunscreen has a higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor), you are good to go out in the sun. Always look for sunscreen with SPF 40 or higher. You can choose a lighter formula if you are concerned about heaviness. 
  • Tanning or sunburn is harmful as well as painful to bear. You can prevent your skin from getting sunburnt with regular application of sunscreen. Just make sure you can minimize sun exposure. 
  • UV rays are big contributing agents of premature aging that are visible as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. It breaks down collagen and elastin (proteins) in the skin cells and disrupts the skin’s elasticity. Hence, with sunscreen, your skin is protected against premature aging. 
  • When looking for skin lightening, some are actually looking for a remedy against hyperpigmentation, one of the major skin issues that most people suffer from. Sunscreen can minimize and prevent hyperpigmentation caused by UV exposure. It inhibits melanin production and reduces the risk of tanning, dark spots, and uneven pigmentation. 
  • Skin cancer caused by prolonged exposure to Ultra Violet radiation is a proven fact. Studies show that unprotected UV exposure can also cause a significant amount of DNA damage. It can be avoided by using sunscreen, which provides a barrier against UV rays.

Make sure your skin is not allergic to any of these. A common way to check is by doing a patch test first. Apply a small amount of your product on your skin and check whether it causes any allergic reactions. If your skin can absorb the sunscreen without any irritation or rashes, you are good to go.

A common notion that is debunked here about sunscreen making your skin lighter is not entirely a myth. Protecting your skin with a ‘skin-lightening sunscreen’ does benefit you in the long run. 

Instead of skin lightening, your main concern should be inclined toward overall skin healthcare. A sunscreen with high SPF content can help you achieve this.
