Is Sun Bum Sunscreen Safe?

Table of Contents

The internet, especially the cosmetic industry is flooded with why sunscreens are indispensable to your skincare routine. This is why you’ve probably spent hours looking up the right sunscreen for your skin- and it’s nearly impossible to miss Sun Bum when it’s about sunscreens.

Wondering if Sun Bum sunscreens are actually worth the hype and safe for your skin? The direct answer is: yes. Read on to discover what makes Sun Bum sunscreen the right choice for your skin- and what might not.

Safety Parameters for Sunscreens

It’s always a great idea to have context beforehand- so before we discuss the details of whether Sun Bum sunscreen is safe for your skin or not, let’s go through the safety parameters for your sunscreen.

Reviewing the quality and effectiveness of sunscreens falls under the government body U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA). The FDA has set high standards for all OTC drugs and is responsible for listing ingredients that are GRASE (Generally safe and effective).

Based on the current scientific evidence, the FDA found that only two sunscreen ingredients, Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide can be classified as GRASE. Two ingredients that have been found to be the most harmful are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate- look out for these whenever you’re scanning the labels.

Since these ingredients can be absorbed through your skin and have long-term effects on your overall health, it is important to make sure you’re using the right products.

There are a lot of other parameters you should consider while buying sunscreen, based on your skin type. Don’t worry, we’ll get to these factors as well!

The Sun Bum Sunscreen Range & Features

Sun Bum offers a wide variety of sunscreens for different skin types and age groups. It also comes in all kinds of packaging, from roll-on to spray sunscreens. They also offer after-sun products and tanning oils.

The sunscreen is available in the original, mineral, signature, and kids’ versions. Here is what makes the Sun Bum products a great choice.

Suitable for All Skin Types

The Sun Bum sunscreen range is designed to cater to people with different skin types. Apart from chemical and mineral-based sunscreens, Sun Bum has a separate range of safe products for children. You can choose from SPF levels ranging from 15 to 70 to protect your skin.

Oxybenzone and Octinoxate free

These chemicals commonly used as active ingredients in sunscreen are extremely toxic for your skin, as well as the environment. According to research, Oxybenzone can easily get absorbed through the skin and can disrupt your hormones, among other effects.

Octinoxate is also known to be readily absorbed through the skin and causes problems in metabolism and hormones. It is also known to cause damage to aquatic life and has been linked to coral bleaching. Sun Bum products are free of both these chemicals.

Broad Spectrum Protection

Sun Bum’s sun care products offer broad-spectrum protection from the sun- which means they protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

The SPF of a sunscreen is only an indicator of the amount of protection you get from UVB rays. Broad spectrum keeps you protected from UVA rays as well- exposure to which can cause premature aging and tanning.

Different kinds of oils are added to sunscreen formulations for a smoother texture and hydration. However, if you have acne-prone skin or oily skin, these products may exacerbate your skin problems.

This is why using Sun Bum’s oil-free formulations can prevent clogging of your pores in addition to giving your skin a non-greasy finish.

Free of Parabens

Although you might’ve heard the term ‘paraben-free’, why is it important? Parabens are chemicals added as preservatives in cosmetics and are extremely harmful to your health. They have also been linked to a number of forms of cancer and fertility problems as well.

Due to the proven impact of paraben on health, it’s important to skip it in sunscreens or any other skin care products. Since Sun Bum sunscreens are free from paraben, they make up for a safer alternative.

For those with gluten sensitivity, Sun Bum sunscreens are a great choice. These gluten-free sunscreens are formulated to be gentler on the skin and cause no reaction when used. Besides, they can be an excellent choice for people with skin problems like hyperpigmentation or eczema.

Sun Bum’s products are hypoallergenic, which are tested and proven to be safe for skin sensitivity. A patch test may still be recommended, but rest assured these sunscreens will not cause skin redness and bumps.

If you’re someone who’s all about embracing environment-friendly choices and a vegan lifestyle, Sun Bum’s products may be the perfect addition to your skincare essentials. These products are also cruelty-free, which means they have not been tested on animals.

Concerns about Sun Bum sunscreen

In May 2023, Valisure released a report of popular brands that showed traces of benzene in their sun care products. Benzene is a toxic chemical that may have adverse effects on your health. Benzene exposure has been linked to chronic long-term effects, like a weakened immune system and effects on your bone marrow. It can also cause blood cancer.

Does Sun Bum sunscreen contain benzene?

According to the report by Valisure, a few products by Sun Bum were also included in the list, one of them being Sun Bum Oxy Free Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Lotion- SPF 50. Previously, in a lawsuit by a plaintiff, similar allegations had been made, but the case was dismissed with prejudice.

Reports suggested that Sun Bum had decided to recall the products after the report, but very little information is available on the matter.

Is Sun Bum reef-safe?

There has been a growing concern over the impact of sunscreen chemicals on aquatic life, especially on coral reefs- certain chemicals used in sunscreens contribute to a phenomenon known as coral bleaching, which can cause the coral reefs to die. Since coral reefs play a significant role in sustaining the aquatic biosystem, this discovery has been extremely alarming.

Although Sun Bum markets its products as Hawaii Act 104 Reef Compliant, most products contain substances that are known to be harmful to reefs or are still under research. These include Avobenzone, Octocrylene, Octisalate, and Homosalate. However, there are a few products that are completely reef-safe.

These products are:

  • Mineral SPF30 Tinted Sunscreen Face Lotion
  • Mineral SPF30 Sunscreen Lip Balm
  • Mineral SPF30 Sunscreen Spray
  • Mineral SPF50 Sunscreen Lotion
  • Mineral SPF50 Sunscreen Face Stick

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right sunscreen is definitely not an easy task- with the wide number of options available at this time, it is harder to discern which brands to trust. Make sure you double-check the ingredients in your sunscreen, and look out for the sneaky ingredients that may not be obvious at first glance. It might be worthwhile to keep in mind that staying updated on the changes in product formulations can also help you make more informed decisions for your skin care.
